[Mod] FFS - we have asked nicely that people discuss sporting events. Politics and controversies don't belong on this thread.[/Mod]

Post 631

This thread is surely for discussing the sports events themselves, not associated issues, political or otherwise.

Can we keep it as a haven for events - if people want to discuss other issues around sports, then they should start OPs, and bearing in mind why this site was started, try to keep the OPs sensible and respectful?

Otherwise the mod team will have to start infracting people

Very unlikely with this hot weather, better chance that Dublin will be beaten in the championship before we have snow.
It's going to happen sooner or later. But we'll enjoy the summer while we have it. 😁

Another threat to Olympics going ahead or not

The Olympics is a totally corrupt farce at this stage. It's an excuse to shovel public money into private hands at the expense of locals. Add to this COVID and Global warming and you've a public health disaster waiting to happen but the corrupt IOC and their cronies don't give a toss about any of that. And what's with the ridiculous 'sports' included: Skateboarding for twelve year olds? Softball? Olympic Golf? Imagine the stress on the olympic horses travelling to 37 degree heat from overseas. It should be put out of its misery in its current form. Let Athens host it every four years and boot out at least half the 'sports'.

I am finding it hard not to agree with this.

It should be an athletics event only.

The Rugby League World Cup is taking place in England this October/November, but now tow of the biggest nations. Australia and New Zealand, have withdrawn because of Covid. It's coming home. To roost.

I'm disappointed by your cynicism towards such a noble institution like the Olympics.

At every step, sports institutions and governing bodies preserve the integrity of sport, and associated traditional dress.

Here are the Europeans fining degenerate women who refuse to wear the appropriately skimpy sportswear mandated for the noble and ancient sport of women's beach volleyball.

Must say as the Sports have become more professional I have lost interest in the Olympics. There was a strange fascination in the days of the Cold War in the East West Battles, but it wasn't the sports that were of much interest. And as scandal after scandal has unfolded as far as I'm concerned it is now a media event.

I take your point, sports like soccer, golf etc have no place in the Olympics. But what about rowing, archery etc these type should definitely be allowed an Olympic gold medal is the pinnacle of achievement in these sports not so for soccer, golf, tennis etc.
The origional olympics was about amateurism, only amateurs should be allowed including golf, soccer it would be harder, even athletics are not amateurs anymore they compete in big meetings. Cycling and tennis it's professionals that compete.

I recall my bemusement many years ago, watching the Olympic soccer tournament, when I recognized several famous players from famous clubs representing their countries. It was about that point when it finally began to dawn on me that the Olympics had become a sham. I haven’t watched it now for decades.

I have no particular objection to professionalism, really; you want to see the best performing at their best. For me it was the drugs. The las Olympics I watched to any degree was 1984.

Meh, if you want to see the fastest, highest, longest and so on watch the Olympics and be glad of it.

You're most likely watching drug cheats everyday anyway ( anyone for a TUE ) and other forms of the big players ( cycling ) and countries applying pressure to get results swinging their way. There's no need to be getting too sniffy about the Olympics, it's only the tip of the iceberg. Anyone in the Rugby fraternity feeling morally superior at this point would want to have a talk with themselves.

Did you ever stop to think that with all the opprobrium that's thrown at Russian Athletes and so on, it's actually the holier than thou shit throwing nations that actually have been carrying caseloads of medals coming home from the Olympics.

Where the difference between winning and losing can be a nostril you will have competitive interests seeking that nostril advantage for themselves.

The commercialism has got obscene. It is one giant media and advertising opportunity with retired sports people paid to whip up enthusiasm.

The abuse and use of painkillers in Rugby is quite something. From taking Neurofen Plus before a game, to living on Diffene and Tramadol.

The last two are hard-core anti inflammation and opiates respectively.

Diffene is hard on the liver and there is little margin between an effective dose and liver damage.

So, as much as I love it, there is a grim spectre regarding players being "fit".

And then there is the whole concussion issue.

Sad but true, I will watch some events, I enjoy the athletics, field events and boxing and rowing where we're expecting to pick up a medal or two.

The British cycling team would never be involved with doping.

Seen in other olympics athleths from African countries competing for other countries with having very little connections to the country
