Temporally dislocated.
I am horrified by this on many levels.

Horrified for this man himself-the fear and terror that must have been experienced by himself and his family.
.
Horrified that the police on both sides of the border are not all over this and that the individuals responsible seem to have been moving about with relative impunity for the last 7 years.

Horrified that these people will have supporters they will defend them and their actions.

Dissident groups were alleged to have had involvement, which begs two questions - why aren't they under surveillance, and is this actually related to the dispute with the Quinn family?

From the Irish Times:

Abducted Quinn executive was threatened with ‘permanent solution’
Death threat was sent to Kevin Lunney’s company four months before attack

Kevin Lunney, the Quinn Industrial Holdings (QIH) executive abducted on Tuesday, was among five senior executives and company directors recently named in an anonymous letter that threatened “a permanent solution” against them.
The letter, received in May, was treated as a death threat by QIH, which passed it on to the Garda and the PSNI.
It appeared to refer to the Slieve Rushen wind farm, located behind a QIH cement factory on the Cavan/Fermanagh border, originally built by businessman Sean Quinn before he lost control of his empire. The wind farm was bought by French-linked company, Platina Energy Partners, in 2014.
Mr Lunney, a 50-year-old father of six was dragged from his car by a masked gang who rammed his vehicle.
Windfarms. Cavan. The plot thickens...

So whats the story behind the story here? Who are these people?
well the local dogs on the street would tell ye that this is reasonably close to the mark...

“a local IRA man of some standing” had led the campaign of intimidation from the start.

“He never moved over to the dissidents, he went more into organised crime while continuing his part in this campaign,” he said.

He added that “a wall of silence” in the community was protecting the suspect.

Another reliable source said a key suspect was from the local area and was involved in local racketeering.

Mr Beatty said they were “using all our force and might to bring to justice those people” who are responsible.

Challenged as to why police had yet to make one arrest regarding the attacks, he said there were a number of live inquiries about attacks over the past two years, which he could not discuss further.

That's the who any idea as to the why?

The why? is irrelevant. It is a criminal act, there is no justification.
I think the 'why?' is more to do with how bizarre this seems from the outside. Generally people need something other than pride in a local former billionaire to orchestrate a campaign of violence and intimidation of this scale. Leaving aside the criminal aspect, the whole thing is downright weird.

Quinn was on radio this morning saying it was a barbaric act and that he hoped nobody would blame his family, or some such words. Why? Some of us cannot quite follow the plot here...

It seems absolutely shocking and shameful that employees should be subject to these horrific assaults on an on-going basis ( one of the directors had boiling water thrown over him) and not a single arrest has ensued

The people who terrorised Lunny , inflicted horrific injuries and left his family fearing for hours that he was dead, are capable of anything.

There seems to have been a sinister silence around past assaults on employees which no doubt emboldened the perpetrators

The why is a big question as it usually leads to the scum who carried this out.
That's a fair point, I took it to mean that if there was a reason behind it, it would be deemed to be justified in some way.

Quinn's viewed as a hero by many in the area, local boy made good who looked after his area job's and investment wise and who was fvked over by the city suits... now the reality maybe some what different but he did employ and generate wealth in the border area and is still held in high regard by many, but really only a few nutjobs think violence will herald the return of the king of Phrygia...

Let's just say it was an assault on Kevin Lunney. a long-time senior executive with Quinn.

There's an awful lot that we don't know we don't know.

How can anyone be sure that this violence wasn't linked to some relic of Quinn Insurance rather than to today's Quinn Industrial Holdings . Quinn Insurance and all its mysteries are definitely not just history - things of the past.

The press comment has always been about the collapse of Quinn Insurance.

I'm surprised there has never been any deep investigation into the way, where, and how it was ever established and financed - and how it was ever authorised to conduct insurance-business..

That's not too different to what I'm hearing.

'Weird' is the only word for it, not least the fact that this has been going on for years, seemingly without a single arrest. And am I dreaming or was there an acid attack or something on a Quinn employee in a shop, at lunchtime?

They burnt out a car in Ratoath a few years ago. It was a miracle the house didn’t go up.

Why is everyone seemingly convinced that the authorities aren't giving the Quinn situation their full attention?

Have ye ever been to the Borderlands? makes the twilight zone seem like a sunny day...
Ah yeah, I can see how letting things slide at this particular moment in time might be advisable, but there's always the Ukraine angle and that place makes the Borderlands look like Disneyland.

In March 2010 he Irish financial regulator placed Quinn Insurance into administration because of solvency issues.

Arrangements for an Inquiry into the affair were then started the following year, 2011.

However the Inquiry Proceedings only commenced this year, at the end of May

This is gruesome.

The dozen-strong gang had prepared a horsebox as a mobile torture chamber before the attack. Some of the 50-year-old’s fingernails were pulled out during the assault, his face and neck were slashed with a Stanley knife and his right leg was badly broken twice below the knee.

His injuries have been described as “life-changing” by gardaí, who said the father of six was beaten “within an inch of his life” before being dumped on a Co Cavan road some 35km from his home.

Police believe the attackers have carried out similar assaults before, given that they took care not to leave behind incriminating DNA evidence by pouring industrial-strength bleach over the businessman’s wounds.
